The Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi Gallery, fitted out as the first art gallery in Europe in the 16th century, was directly affected by the flood due to its proximity to the Arno River, although luckily the works of art in the upper galleries were spared. The workshops located on the ground floor, such as those in the Vasariano corridor, which was created in 1565 by Vasari for Cosimo I to connect the gallery to his family home, the Palazzo Pitti, contained art treasures of immeasurable value, some of which could be saved due to prompt reactions.
